Contenders for greatest song ever

Songs are one of the few things of which I don't have a favourite.  But I do have a 'list of contenders'.  These are songs that would be contenders for my favourite song.  However, the list is limited to one song per artist, because the difficulty in having a favourite song is that I find it difficult to compare songs between different artists.  But I can usually pick my favourite song within a particular artist's work.
This list is a work in progress - sometimes songs leave the list and, of course, new songs can be added.
